Rotary Youth Physical Arts Project

The Rotary Club of Richmond has a long and rich history of helping the most disadvantaged young people in our community. During the 90's the Rotary Youth Training Extension (RYTE) helped hundreds of young people learn how to apply for a job, experienced work in mentored workplace and then many (in excess of 80%) found work or returned to education.
Since 2001 the Club has been working closely with the City of Yarra, State Government, Community Service organizations and Arts organizations,‘ The Artful Dodgers', ‘Visionary Images' and ‘YSAS' in the Rotary Youth Arts Project to provide an opportunity for extremely disadvantaged young people disconnected from society and with the threat of suicide to be able to re connect by participating in innovative and creative art. While this is not a rapid process the research demonstrated that 39% entered some form of employment or returned to some form of education and the remainder reduced their anxiety levels and the risk of suicide.
This project has entered a new phase with a change in art form - the Rotary Youth Physical Arts Project. This joint youth project brings together the Rotary Clubs of Richmond and Collingwood, the City of Yarra, community service organizations including YSAS, Collingwood Youth Centre, Jesuit Social Services, North Richmond Community Health Centre, North Yarra Community Health Centre and three innovative arts organizations, Dancehouse, Westside Circus and the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP).
The Rotary Youth Physical Arts Project is on its first six months stage. In total across the three locations, 52 young people are participating. They are developing their skills and talents and are working towards exhibitions and performances towards the end of 2005.
